Getting To The ‘root’ Of Gum Disease

You’ve been taking good care of your teeth, but still you’ve developed inflammation or infection centered around the gum line. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence. First, let’s explore the causes and consequences of gum disease. When plaque — that bacteria-laden film on the teeth — is allowed to accumulate, it hardens into tartar, which in turn leads to gum disease. If left untreated, periodontal disease can result in the loss of teeth and their underlying bone. 

But there’s no need to panic, because we have the treatments that will effectively and comfortably eliminate these pesky poachers lurking beneath the gum line. We will carefully explain our process beforehand and address any questions or concerns you may have. Our non-surgical treatment begins with a deep cleaning in the spaces (or “pockets”) between the teeth, which we call “scaling.” The all-important next step is to smooth out the roots of the teeth, which effectively reduces the hiding places for plaque and toxins to build up in the future. This is a procedure we call root planing. 

Of course, we’ll be taking all the necessary steps to administer our treatments as comfortably as possible through the use of a topical anesthetic if indicated, and recommend steps for dealing with any lingering soreness afterward.
