Gum disease has been referred to as a “silent” or “quiet” health condition because it often carries little or no warning. Yet the consequences of untreated periodontal disease can be alarmingly serious. Besides tooth loss, gum disease has been linked to serious health conditions. You may find it surprising to learn that adults over 30 years of age have a 50 percent chance of showing early signs of gum disease known as gingivitis, and nine percent have a more serious case of periodontal disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

What causes these conditions? Bacteria that builds up and irritates the gums is the main culprit, which often occurs because of inadequate or irregular brushing and flossing. This bacterial invasion erodes the tissue under the gums and the bone supporting the teeth begins to break down. Our periodontist uses a special instrument to measure the space between the teeth and gums; larger spaces indicate that periodontal disease has taken root.

The health concerns triggered by periodontal disease don’t end in our mouths. The bacteria that’s been allowed to build up can get into our bloodstream and be transported to organs throughout the body. This can contribute to the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and pneumonia. Inflammation triggered by gum disease has even been linked to dementia.
