Gum Recession Can Be Unsightly and Unhealthy

December 27, 2021

Are your gums receding? Are they swollen or bleeding, or have you noticed that one or more of your teeth has become more exposed? Gum recession is a gradual process that may not always be visible to the untrained eye. But the periodontist at Rockville Centre for Dentistry specializes in all things related to the health of your gums and their supporting bone structure, and is trained to identify and treat a problem like gum recession, which can leave you vulnerable to a number of oral health issues.

Gum recession occurs when the soft tissue surrounding a tooth pulls away, exposing the root of the tooth and triggering potential damage to the underlying bone. This common problem experienced by many adults is generally caused by an excessive buildup of tartar — a calcified deposit that can form below the gum line. Exposed roots not only look unsightly, but can result in the teeth becoming increasingly sensitive to hot or cold foods and beverages. Left untreated, this form of periodontal disease can eventually result in tooth loss.

Fortunately, periodontists have treatments to cover the exposed roots of the affected teeth, and help prevent the recession from becoming more serious. The procedure — called a gum graft — commonly uses tissue from elsewhere in the mouth to protect the exposed area. There are several types of gum grafts performed by periodontists, depending on the specific needs of the patient. Today’s technology and techniques allow this procedure to be accomplished comfortably and successfully, right in our state-of-the-art office.
